Will there come a day when smartphones will no longer be needed? While it’s hard to find many people who would agree with this today, the same question posed about desktop computers a few decades ago would likely have garnered similar responses. Yet, today, no one would say “I can’t do without a desktop.”
Smartphones have a significant impact on our daily lives. There is no real alternative when it comes to staying connected with the outside world, making it almost unimaginable that smartphones will become obsolete anytime soon.
However, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of the popular social media company Meta, believes that the day will come when smartphones will no longer be necessary. He has even predicted when that might happen, along with the technology that will replace it. According to Zuckerberg, smart glasses will eventually take over from smartphones as the next generation of computing platforms. This transition will happen gradually, with smartphone use declining and the adoption of smart glasses increasing. He forecasts that this shift will occur sometime in the 2030s.
Zuckerberg states, “There will come a time when our smartphones will be kept more inside our pockets than outside. I believe this will happen in the 2030s. While you may still use your phone for certain tasks more effectively, people will begin using smart glasses for convenience.”
In September, at the Meta Connect event, the company showcased their much-talked-about Orion smart glasses. These glasses, which are built with augmented reality (AR) technology, may take another couple of years before they go into commercial production.
Meanwhile, Apple has already released its AR smart glasses, Vision Pro, and several companies in China are also working on similar devices. Only time will tell if Zuckerberg’s predictions about the future of technology hold true.
